Wyalusing Board Brings Back Stark on Interim Basis

By Wes Skillings

Former Wyalusing School District Superintendent Warner Stark will be coming out of retirement next week to take over as interim superintendent while the school board goes through the hiring process for a successor. As reported on Monday by The Rocket-Courier on its web page, Stark will take over Monday, Aug. 2, and serve until a replacement is found.

The current superintendent, Michael Mahon, tendered his resignation last month to take on the superintendent’s job in the Abington Heights School District. Mr. Mahon is a resident of Clarks Summit and that is his home school district. School district employees were informed at the end of last week of Stark’s pending appointment.

In the meantime, there has yet to be any official announcement of who will be filling the positions of head football coach and athletic director. Mr. Mahon and WVHS Principal Marty Weisgold have told The Rocket-Courier that we will be informed as soon as a decision is made. It appears that Mahon will be leaving for his job at Abington Heights by next week and that Stark will be sitting in on a number of crucial hirings.

Aside from the aforementioned slots to fill, there are apparently many applicants for the position of Technology Coordinator vacated by Joseph Kormis and Technology Specialist Robert Lines, who is reportedly going to the Tunkhannock Area School District with Kormis. School Director Debbie Stethers reported last week that there were numerous applicants to choose from for the technology jobs.

It still appears the school board will not meet until their regular monthly meeting on Aug. 9. There was no announcement of a special board meeting as of Wednesday. In the meantime, the appointment of Stark has been announced, and he will actually be serving as interim superintendent before the school board formally votes on hiring him.

The Rocket-Courier reported in its July 15th edition that hiring Stark to temporarily serve as superintendent was a scenario being considered. Stark retired during the 2002-03 school year, and Mahon succeeded him at that time.
