David E. Cook
David E. Cook, 67, of Wysox, PA, passed away Friday, Oct. 21, 2016 at the Skilled Nursing Unit of Guthrie Towanda Memorial Hospital, after a long and courageous battle with Multiple Myeloma cancer. David was born in Towanda on Nov. 4, 1948, the son of Ralph Marshall Cook and Elizabeth VanNess Cook. He was a graduate of Towanda High School with the Class of 1966, and following high school, worked as a bricklayer’s apprentice. David was a veteran of the Vietnam War, having served in the U.S. Army in Vietnam and was the recipient of the Purple Heart Medal.
Upon completion of his military service, David returned home to continue his trade as a bricklayer and later served as a rural mail carrier until May of 1986, when he joined his father in the operation of their sand and gravel business, which he continued until his retirement in January of 2007.
David enjoyed dirt track sprint car racing, traveling and hunting.
He was highly skilled in many aspects of building and metal work and was a fine welder, mechanic and all-around craftsman with an eye for detail.
He was very active with the 199th Light Infantry Brigade, attending reunions and keeping in touch with fellow veterans regularly. In recent years, he made friendships with other vets, specifically his “Group” buddies.
As a committed church member, he positively affected people’s lives in his roles as Sunday School teacher and church treasurer.
David was a life member of Beirne-Webster VFW Post 1568, Towanda and Crash Memorial Chapter Disabled American Veterans Post, Towanda.
Surviving are his children, Sean E. Cook and wife, Tara of Orwigsburg, Tammy J. Nevin and husband, Rod of Reading; grandchildren, Ethan and Sarah Nevin; his mother, Elizabeth “Betty” Cook, who is a resident of the Bradford County Manor in Troy; sister, Joyce Mix of Cogan Station; mother-in-law, Nannette Light of Wysox; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Joyce and Robert Warburton of Jupiter, FL, as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his wife of 39 years, Linda L. Cook on March 25, 2011; father, Ralph Marshall Cook on Oct. 1, 1992; father-in-law, Howard Light on Feb. 8, 1998 and mother-in-law, June Howland Light on Nov. 9, 1954.
The family will receive friends at the Maryott-Bowen Funeral Home, 217 York Avenue, Towanda, on Friday, Oct. 28 from 6 to 8 p.m. The funeral service will be held Saturday, Oct. 29 at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with Pastor Bill Klees of the Community Alliance Church in Monroeton officiating. Interment will be in the Wysox Cemetery, with Towanda American Legion Post No. 42 according full military honors.
