Born in Laceyville on Aug. 5, 1942, he was the son of the late Maynard J. Bowman, who passed away on Sept. 12, 1998, and Minnie V. Hawley Bowman, who passed away on Sept. 20, 2005.
He was a graduate of Wyalusing High School, Class of 1961. Sam worked as a machinist foreman for Cornell Manufacturing (later named Pendu Manufacturing) for over 25 years, retiring in 2008. He also was a truck driver and a heavy equipment operator for Sam VanDeMark, Burt Smith and Art Shelley.
Mr. Bowman thoroughly enjoyed his retirement with his grandsons. They took pleasure in working on and showing antique tractors and engines. In addition, he was a member of Endless Mountains Antique Power Association.
Surviving are his wife of 48 years, the former Virginia A. Kirk, whom he married on Aug. 24, 1963; daughter, Beth Polovitch of Nicholson; grandsons, Eric Polovitch of Springville and Alex Polovitch of Nicholson; brother, Merton (Mert) Bowman and his wife, Karen of Lawton and his sister, Mary Lee Goodwin of Mehoopany. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Memorial services and interment will be held at a later date at the convenience of the family.
