Mr. George W. Bitler, 89 of 173 Allen St., Meshoppen, PA. passed away late Friday evening, Feb. 24, 2012 at the Golden Living Center, in Tunkhannock where he had been a resident for the last month. Mr. Bitler was born in Mehoopany on Feb. 10, 1923 the son of the late Thomas and Mabel Manning Bitler. Growing up in Washington Twp., Wyoming Co., he was a lifelong resident of Wyoming County.
He was a graduate of the Tunkhannock High School. After high school he started working for the Stanek Poultry Farm, on Stanek Rd., in Meshoppen and later worked for Burr’s Poultry Farm also in Meshoppen.
He was a long-time member of the Mehoopany United Methodist Church, and in his spare time he enjoyed following all kinds of sports, especially an avid Philadelphia Eagle fan.
Surviving are his sister-inlaw, Mrs. Alice Bitler of Meshoppen; a nephew, Rev. Kenneth Bitler, currently a missionary in Trinidad; two great nieces and one great nephew. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by a brother, Albert Bitler in 1999; nephew, Edward Bitler and a niece, Sandra Bitler.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday afternoon, Feb. 29 at the Sheldon Funeral Home, Main St., Meshoppen, at 4 p.m. with Rev. Jean Swett of the Mehoopany United Methodist Church officiating. Interment was in the Vaughn Cemetery in Mehoopany. Family and friends called at the funeral home on Wednesday from 3 p.m. until the time of the service.
