Donald Franklin Hite, 67, went home to be with his Lord on Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2012, at the Veterans Central Living Center in Bath NY. He was born on Dec. 11, 1944, a son of the late Robert F. and Lela Kipp Hite in New Albany PA. He attended New Albany Elementary and graduated from Wyalusing Valley High School in 1962. He was in FFA.
After graduation at the age of 17, he joined the United States Navy and was stationed in Newport, RI on the Destroyer USS Lloyd Thomas. Donald returned home in 1968. He sustained permanent disabilities after being struck by a drunk driver. He was cared for at home by his mother for 41 years. Even though he was severely disabled, he lived a very full life, had a great sense of humor and had many, many friends.
He was a member of the New Era United Methodist Church, D.A.V., the Wyalusing American Legion Post 534 and V.F.W.
He remained at home and enjoyed Bingo, camping and his family until a leg injury made it necessary for him to enter the Veteran Administration, Central Living Center at Bath, NY. Donald made many special friends and enjoyed their many activities.
He was very caring and loving to his surviving brothers and sisters, Robert L. (Barbara) Hite of Towanda, Ida (Clifford) Bennett of Athens, Marilyn (Clifford) Torguson of Latah, WA, Marian (Earl E., Sr.) Swackhamer of New Albany, a brother of the heart, Dick (Luann) Hardgrave, and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
In heaven he will be joining his mother and father, Robert F. and Lela; his sister and brotherin law, Roberta and Eugene Estes of Sayre.
Family and friends called on Saturday, March 3 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Russell P. McHenry Funeral Home, 119 Carpenter St., Dushore. A funeral service followed at 3 p.m. in the funeral home with Rev. Dale Anchuetz officiating. Interment was held in the Bradford County Memorial Park, Towanda, with military honors accorded.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Veterans Activities for CLC3, Volunteers Services, VA Hospital, Bath NY, 14810, in Donald’s memory.
