Francis Leo Fowler, 78, of New Albany, PA passed away Sunday morning, Sept. 30, 2012 at the Darway Elder Care Rehab Center. Born in Towanda on Sept. 30, 1934, he was the son of Wayne and Josephine Haverly Fowler. He was raised in New Albany where he graduated from high school in 1952. He then joined the Navy.
Leo married the former Iva Shaffer on Sept. 1, 1954 in Fort Worth, TX. Upon returning home from the service, he worked at Fitzpatrick and Lambert of Dushore. Following that, he worked for the Ford Motor Company in Towanda as a mechanic and then as shop manager. In 1959, he opened his own garage in New Albany. In 1972, Leo began driving school bus for the Wyalusing School District. He faithfully drove his route for 31 years. He also established Fowler’s Coal Company and operated it for 30 years, until June of this year, at which time he turned it over to his son due to his failing health. For many summers he enjoyed working with his brother, Bruce Fowler, as a bulldozer operator for Fowler Excavating.
Leo is survived by his wife of 58 years, Iva Fowler; children, Cathy Sayman, Ronald Fowler, Jeffrey Fowler and Joseph Fowler; 10 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and his two brothers, Kenneth Fowler and Bruce Fowler. Leo will be remembered as a man of integrity with a strong work ethic and a warm smile.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Wayne and Josephine Fowler.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 4, at the New Albany Baptist Church, with Pastor Terry Van- Horn officiating. A fellowship luncheon for all in attendance will be held at the New Albany Fire Hall. Memorial contributions can be sent to the New Albany Baptist Church in lieu of flowers.
