Driver Charged in Wyalusing School Bus Incident
Pennsylvania State Police at Towanda have charged Penny Jean Gorens, 47, Coatesville, with endangering the welfare of children and leaving the scene of a crash resulting in injury in conjunction with the school bus accident on Cotter Road in Wilmot Township on Nov. 12. The bus was carrying about 40 students from the Wyalusing Area School District at the time.
According to police, Gorens made a turn onto Cotter Road at a high rate of speed at about 4 p.m. and subsequently drove the bus off a seven-foot embankment into a field. Police indicated that several students were injured, and Gorens was advised by witnesses at the scene that 911 had been called, but she failed to check students for injuries or for damage to the bus and fled the scene with the remaining children on board.
Emergency responders caught up with Bus 20 a distance from the scene, but Gorens refused treatment for the children. Gorens is also facing summary offenses related to operation of the school bus, which contributed to the crash as well as for making false reports to law enforcement officials.
