Donald Hillard, Sr.
Donald L. Hillard Sr., 66, of Mehoopany, PA, died Sunday, Feb. 24, 2013, at the VA Hospital, Wilkes-Barre after an illness. His wife of 42 years, the former Sarah Gallagher, died April 29, 2008. He was born in Larksville, son of the late Leroy and Elizabeth Hettesheimer Hillard.
He was a graduate of Larksville High School, class of 1964. He served in the Vietnam Conflict with the U. S. Navy as a gunner’s mate on the USS Catamount. He was a retired employee of Procter & Gamble, Mehoopany Plant. After retiring, he also drove tractor-trailer for Penn’s Best and Geary Concrete. He served as a supervisor for Windham Twp. for many years.
He was a member of Factoryville Lodge #341, a member of the Me-hoopany VFW Post and the Black Walnut American Legion Post #510.
He formerly served as an assistant chief for FWM Fire Company and was also a member of the Meshoppen Fire Company. He volunteered for many years with the Laceyville Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts as a Scoutmaster. He was also a Ham Radio operator.
He loved to travel the countryside on his Trike, and especially enjoyed taking his grandchildren up the mountain on his Gator. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and loved to work with his John Deere tractor clearing his land and helping out his neighbors. His favorite times were the time he spent with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his son, Dennis Harold Hillard in 2000.
Survivors include two sons, Donald, Jr. of Laceyville and Darren and his wife, Michelle of Meshoppen; a daughter, Sarah and her husband, Raymond Corker of Mehoopany; a daughter in-law, Angela Hillard of Tunkhannock; grandchildren: Donald, III, Philip, Kyle, Andrew, Aerial, Zackary, Brandon, Aiden and Ariel and two great-grandchildren, Abigail and Hailey and several cousins.
The funeral will be held Friday, March 1 at 11 a.m. at the Harding-Litwin Funeral Home, 123 W. Tioga St., Tunkhannock. Interment will be in Orcutts Grove Cemetery, Noxen. Friends may call on Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. Masonic services will be held at 7:30 p.m.
