Gertrude Smith

Gertrude E. Smith, 99, of Herrick Township, PA, passed away early Saturday morning, March 23, 2013, at the Skilled Nursing Unit of Memorial Hospital, Towanda.

Gertrude was born April 6, 1913, at home in North Orwell, PA to the late Albert Stephen Smith and Mary Elizabeth (Hamilton) Smith Green. She was a graduate of Orwell High School and Rome High School. In September of 1947, Gertrude married Howard Andrew Smith (no relation).

He passed away on Dec. 5, 1970. She was a devoted homemaker who loved spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and was very fond of her entire family. She enjoyed caring for her flowers and enjoyed her family’s dogs, horses and cats.

She is survived by her daughter, Maxine Furman (Harry) Camp of Wyalusing; grandchildren, Carolyn (Brian Barto) Clouse, Michael Camp, David (Dawn) Camp, Yvonne (James) Donovan, all of Wyalusing; great-grandchildren, Melissa (Tim Knowles) Clouse, Ashley, Alexander, and Elyce Camp, Cody, Christopher, and Cheyanna Camp; great-great-grandchildren, Aryssa and Coye Knowles and Ashlynn; daughter, Sarah Smith (Martin) Hoover of Limestone, TN; grandchildren, Stacey (Loren) Pearce, Ronald Hoover, Jessica (Martin Harrell) Hipsher; great-grandchildren, Terrie Lynn and Andrew Casterline, Corby, Marshall and Juanita Hipsher and Martin Harrell; special caregiver, Lynn Nonnemaker of Windham; special friend, Peggy Bennett of Camptown, several special nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, Howard, she was preceded in death by her former spouse, Hugh Maxwell Furman; sisters, Nora Louise, age two years, of North Orwell, Ruth C. (Lloyd) Moore, age 95, of North Orwell, Mary Margaret (Harold) Gates, age 87, of Conklin, NY; brother, Albert “Smitty” (Eleanor) Smith, age 96, of Waverly, NY and great-granddaughter, DeAnna Camp, age two months, of Laceyville.

The family extends their deepest appreciation to the staff of the Skilled Nursing Unit of Memorial Hospital for the loving care provided Gertrude. A time of visitation with family and friends will be held Saturday, April 6 from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Camptown Community Church, Camptown, PA with a memorial service to follow with Pastor William Westbrook officiating. Interment will be private in Tioga Point Cemetery, Athens.

The family will provide their own flowers and requests that contributions be directed to the Skilled Nursing Unit of Memorial Hospital, 91 Hospital Drive, Towanda, PA 18848 or to the American Cancer Society, Bradford Unit, 1948 East Third St., Williamsport, PA 17701-3945 in Gertrude E. Smith’s memory.
