Esther Karpauitz

Esther Jean Wilbur Karpauitz, 78, of Wyalusing, PA, formerly a long-time resident of Towanda, passed away peacefully Thursday, July 18, 2013 at the Skilled Nursing Unit of Memorial Hospital, Towanda.

Born in Montrose on May 21, 1935, she was the daughter of John and Arlene Blaisure Wilbur. She attended grade school in Laceyville and Birchardville and graduated from Rush High School in 1953.

On June 6, 1953, she married Robert L. Karpauitz in the Stevensville Presbyterian Church. Esther was employed by Hurr’s Dairy Store from 1960- 1969, the J.J. Newberry Store from 1970-1975 and the Hub Store, all in Towanda, from 1975- 1984. In 1984, she became employed by E.I. DuPont in Towanda and remained there until her retirement in April of 2000.

During her retirement, Esther delivered flowers for the Towanda Florist and Baskets Blooms & Beyond. She was a member of the North Towanda United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women’s Group. She was a life member of the Towanda Gun Club, Monroeton Rod & Gun Club and the Towanda Elks Lodge Auxiliary. She was a member and past president of the Towanda American Legion Auxiliary, member of the LeRaysville Cemetery Board, served as a Memorial Hospital Hospice volunteer for nine years and volunteered at Memorial Hospital’s Gift Shop and for several additional local organizations. Esther was active in Girl Scouts for 33 years and was active in Brownies and Girl Scouts when her daughters and granddaughters were members.

Mrs. Karpauitz enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and many Sharaton bus trips over the years with her sister, Ruth. She will be remembered for the numerous greeting cards for all occasions she sent to family and friends and for her extensive collection of angels and Barbie dolls.

Esther battled cancer from 1996 until she was declared free of the disease in 2002. As a cancer survivor, she assisted with the Relay for Life and additional Cancer Society programs. She was very thankful and felt deeply blessed for the assistance she received and dedicated prayer and prayer chains of family and many truly wonderful friends, which provided healing, support and strength.

Survivors include her children, Susan Allis and husband, Jack of Monroeton, Gary L. Karpauitz of Monroeton, Robin Moore and husband, Lee of West Warren, Allan “Ark” Karpauitz of Hornbrook, Lorinda Vanderpool and husband, Robert of Spring Lake; grandchildren, Jason Moore and wife, Amber, Natasha Karpauitz, Nichole Karpauitz and fiancĂ©, John Keeney, Ashley Allis, Melinda Milliron and husband, Jesse, Joshua Vanderpool and wife, Patricia and R. J. Baker; greatgrandchildren, Taci and Tanner Milliron; brothers, Allan “Sarge” Wilbur and wife, Marie of Wyalusing, Grant Wilbur and Bonnie of Rush; a sister, Ruth Clearwater and husband, George of LeRaysville, as well as several brothers-in-law, sisters in-law, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert L. Karpauitz on March 4, 1990; a son, Russell Karpauitz on Aug. 3, 1954; father, John Wilbur on Aug. 3, 1975; mother, Arlene Wilbur on Dec. 25, 1980; a greatgrandson, Payton Milliron on Jan. 27, 2007 and a sister-in-law, Helen Wilbur.

A memorial service was held Monday, July 22 at 2 p.m. at the North Towanda United Methodist Church with Pastor David Dewing officiating. The family receivee friends on Monday from noon to 2 p.m. at the church. Interment will be private in the LeRaysville Cemetery, LeRaysville.
