Born on Sept. 4, 1939, he was a son of the late Stephen F. and Kathryn Adams VanDeMark. He married the former Gail Shaffer of Towanda on May 11, 1963, having recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. John graduated from Wyalusing High School in the Class of 1957. He worked for Farm and Home Supply during high school and continued working for them after he graduated.
John was drafted into the United States Army and served from 1963-1965. Returning home, he continued working for Farm and Home and retired in 1999 after 42 years of service. Farm and Home sent him and his wife on a land and sea cruise to Alaska as a retirement gift.
He was a member of the Wyalusing United Methodist Church, having been a former secretary for the Sunday school program. He was a lifetime member of the Wyalusing American Legion Post 534, a member of the NRA, as well as the Eastern Bradford Rod & Gun Club. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and traveling. He and Gail have attended and camped at the Bloomsburg Fair every year since 1972.
John liked to escape the cold weather months to Hernando, FL and in the summer he liked camping at Haigh’s Pond. He loved laughing and joking with his family and many special friends. And especially loved attending all of his grandchildren’s events. John was a loving husband, father and grandfather and will be missed by all who knew him.
Surviving are his spouse, Gail, at home; son, Alan F. (Tina) VanDeMark of Wyalusing; daughters and son-in-law, Kathy (Bill) Smith of Homets Ferry; Eileen VanDeMark of Wyalusing; grandchildren: Brittany, Dillan, Kala, Ashton and Alaina; brothers and sisters in-law, Joseph VanDeMark of Sugar Run, Paul (Jane) VanDeMark of Camptown, Mark (Dolores) VanDe- Mark of Cordele, GA; sisters and brothersin law, Marilyn (Wayne) Scott of Canton; Jean (Gordon) Miller of Wyalusing; Marlene (Butch) Chamberlin of Wyalusing; Linda (Bob) Porter of Wyalusing; aunt, Mila May of Canton and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, Sept. 14 at noon at the Wyalusing United Methodist Church, Wyalusing, with the Rev. Dale L. Russell officiating. Interment followed in Lime Hill Cemetery, Wyalusing.
Friends called on Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at the church.
Pallbearers were Jim Rogers, Jim Birdsall, Bob Porter, Bill Smith, Sr., Butch Chamberlin, Gordon Miller, Bob Crossett and Donald Burgess. Honorary pallbearers were Dillion Smith and Avery Moore.
Arrangements were under the direction of P. Dean Homer Funeral Home, 1 Grovedale Lane, Wyalusing.
The family provided their own flowers and ask that memorial contributions be directed in John’s name to the Wyalusing United Methodist Church Parsonage Roof Fund, PO Box 155, Wyalusing, PA 18853 or the American Cancer Society, Bradford County Unit, 1948 E. 3rd St., Williamsport, PA 17701-3945.
