Robert A. Bartron, 78, of Montrose, PA, passed away Saturday, Nov. 23, 2013 at his home. Born April 28, 1935 in Portland, PA, he was the son of the late Arthur and Anna Katherine (Smith) Bartron.
During his high school years, he was employed by the Daniel G. Warner Funeral Home in Stroudsburg. After graduation from East Stroudsburg High School, he fulfilled his pre-mortuary course requirements at East Stroudsburg State Teacher’s College and in 1957 graduated from the Eckel’s School of Mortuary Science located in Philadelphia. He returned to Stroudsburg and served his apprenticeship.
His funeral career was interrupted with a tour of duty from 1958 to 1960 in the U.S. Army Medical Corps in Fort Sam Houston, TX. After his service in the army he returned to PA and was employed by the Carl W. Kegel Funeral Home in Palmerton and the Robert A. Harris Funeral Home in Coatesville. In 1968, he and his family moved to Montrose, at which time they purchased the Arthur H. Bowen Funeral Home from Arthur’s widow, Mildred and named the funeral home, Robert A. Bartron Funeral Home. He continued to work at the funeral home until his health no longer permitted.
He has served in the Susquehanna County Coroner’s Office for 35 years, both as Chief Deputy Coroner and Coroner. Bob was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Montrose, the Montrose Rotary Club, the Board of Directors of the Susquehanna County Housing and Redevelopment Authority, Warren Lodge 240 F.&A.M., the Montrose Club and many other charitable organizations throughout his career.
In 2001, he was awarded the Citizen of the Year by the Daughters of the American Revolution and again in 2012 by the Montrose Area Chamber of Commerce.
He was active in golf where he was a member of the Montrose Club, snowmobiling, skiing where he was a long-time member of the 70+ Ski Club and also tennis where he maintained the tennis courts at the Montrose Club for numerous years.
Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Marie (LaTourette) Bartron of Montrose; daughter, Rebecca Feuerherd of Kensington, MD; sons and daughters-inlaw, Brian and Mary Jo Bartron of Varysburg, NY, Benson and Rachel Bartron of Elk Lake; grandchildren, Benjamin, Zachary (Diane) and Bridget Feuerherd, Catherine and Tracey Sells, Maximus and Lucas Bartron; great-granddaughter, Halee Sells and sister, Imogene Bugge-Farrell of Washington, NJ.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his son-in-law, Joseph Feuerherd and a sister, Kathleen “Kassy” Fox.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Nov. 30 at 11 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of Montrose, Montrose.
Friends and family may call from 6 to 9 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home and one hour prior to services on Saturday at the church.
