Born Nov. 20, 1931, the eldest son of the late Bruce S. and Mary Elizabeth Willson Dibble, he graduated from the Wyalusing Valley High School as a member of the Class of 1949. He married the former Marilyn McCarty of Sugar Run on Jan. 31, 1954, and they recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.
Dick owned and operated his family grocery store, Dibble’s Markets in Wyalusing, Laceyville and Wysox for over 30 years. He was a man of many interests and talents. Along with being in the grocery business, he was a pilot who enjoyed many hours in his glider.
He was a talented musician and performer, a talent he developed at a very young age with his mother at the piano accompanying him. He took part in many community musicals throughout the years. He often performed with his two brothers, singing three-part harmony. He was a member of the Wyalusing Adult Band.
His other interests included building and firing cannons, painting, woodcarving, riding his John Deere tractors, photography, reading, operating radio controlled airplanes, lay ministry, astronomy and wine making— to name a few. He could pretty much build or repair anything. He always believed any information could be found in the pages of a book.
Dick took great pride in his family, especially children, grandchildren and great-grandchild, and could always capture their interest with his talent for mimicry and interesting sounds, not to mention his soothing lullabies.
He was a member of the Sugar Run Presbyterian Church and former member of the Wilmot Fire Department. He was also a 50-year member of the Soaring Society of America.
Surviving are his spouse, Marilyn at home; three daughters, Pamela (David) Patt Obert of Monroeton, Paula E. (Michael) Salsman of Sugar Run, Melinda (Daniel) Manvell of Browntown; brother, Dennis W. (Patti) Dibble of Sciotavale; brother-in-law, Tom (Judy) McCarty of Kansas; sister in-law, Kerry Dibble of Philadelphia; six grandchildren, one great-grandchild and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by a son, Scott Richard Dibble on Jan. 22, 1956; a grandson, Blaine Michael Salsman on Dec. 29, 1992 and a brother, David George Dibble on Sept. 28, 1988.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, April 30 at 11 a.m. at the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home, 1 Grovedale Lane, Wyalusing, with the Rev. John H. Dabback and Rev. Dr. Barry Ballard officiating. Interment will be at a later date in the Wyalusing Cemetery.
