First off, a semi-auto AK-47

First off, a semi-auto AK-47 is not a Class 3 firearm. It is no different than selling you're .308 bolt-action hunting rifle. In fact, because it is a long-gun, it doesn't even require a federal firearms transfer if sold between private parties. If it were a fully automatic, it would require a Class 3 FFL holder to do the paperwork, as well as a $2000 fee, intensive background check, etc., in addition to there being only one Class 3 FFL in PA. There are too many unknowns to vilify Officer Chamberlain. The weapon was most likely unloaded, as it is illegal for a anyone to transport a loaded long-gun unless in the course of law enforcement duties. Was he conducting private business on his break? If so, no issue. If he was on the clock, then it is up to his superiors on how to handle the situation. It's a testiment to how anti-gun we've become as a society that this has become as big of an issue as it has. I understand asking questions, but I'd think a reporter/newspaper would try to get some basic facts about the case before jumping to the conclusion that some criminal activity is occuring.

I can believe that something

I can believe that something like this issue with Officer Chamberlain would get overlooked and be viewed as what's best for the borough at this time. The recourse to this could be vital, as residents who are protected by the Police Dept are going to view this in a manner of well the police can sell class 3 fire arms from the trunk of a vehicle so we can too. Lets be realistic here, the sale of class 3 fire arms requires a registered class 3 fire arms dealer license, so say I performed the same routine the Officer Chamberlain did minus using an official police vehicle, I sell the same semi automatic rifle out the trunk of my car and get caught by the police, my punishment would be much worse then a suspension and 6 months probation. I would probably see prison sentence and not be allowed to own another fire arm in my life.
