August Hebda

August Joseph Hebda, 99, of Stevensville, PA passed away on Thursday, July 10, 2014 at Memorial Hospital, Towanda.

Born in Ashley, PA on Nov. 5, 1914, he was a son of the late Joseph Hebda and Catherine Kraj Hebda. He married the former Stella Koniszewski of Stevensville on Nov. 27, 1941. She predeceased him on March 15, 2012.

Augie, as he liked to be called, was a dairy farmer in Stevensville on Clapper Hill Road for most of his life. He was a hard worker and enjoyed the camaraderie of his neighboring farmers as they harvested the crops.

After 32 or more years of farming, he retired and worked for Ted Solowiej for several years where he learned about home building. He then worked for Whipple Brothers in Laceyville where he helped to construct trusses, doors and other building pieces.

He was also elected as the Stevens Township Supervisor for more than 20 years, retiring in 2001. He enjoyed working with his fellow roadmen. He set high standards that are still in effect today.

He was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish in Wyalusing. He helped on many projects and church picnics throughout the years. The most significant project was the building of the then new church. He provided lumber from his own woods for construction materials. He also made swings and other pieces of furniture to be raffled off at the church picnics.

Augie taught himself to make beautiful furniture and all members of the family have several pieces of his craftsmanship in their homes. He was a loving and caring husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He will be greatly missed.

Surviving are a son, Joseph Hebda of Martinsburg, WV; daughter, Theresa (Robert) McDonough of Vestal, NY; four grandchildren, Theodore and Cameron Hebda, Jon (Tracy) McDonough and James (Kristine) McDonough; two great-granddaughters, Emma and Addison McDonough; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by four sisters, Caroline Hebda, Bertha Hebda, Josephine Hebda and Stella Panko.

A Transferal Service will be held on July 15 at 9:30 a.m. from the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home, 1 Grovedale Lane, Wyalusing, and followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church, Wyalusing. Interment will be in St. Anthony’s Cemetery, Stowell.

Friends called at the Homer Funeral Home on Monday, July 14 from 4 to 6 p.m.

The family will provide the flowers and memorial contributions may be directed to St. Mary’s of the Assumption Church, 245 State St., Wyalusing, PA 18853.
