Irene Sowden Irene Sowden Irene T. Jakubowski Sowden, 89, formerly of Wilmot Township, passed away on Tuesday, Aug. 19, 2014 at Country Meadows, Allentown, PA, with her loving family at her side.

Born June 24, 1925 in Hanover Green, PA, she was a daughter of the late Stanley Jakubowski and Jennie Obidzinski Jakubowski. She graduated from high school in Hanover Green and married Albert James Sowden, Jr. of Philadelphia on May 29, 1948. She met Al at a dance while she was attending the Philadelphia General Hospital School of Nursing. They moved to Wilmot Township in 1970 and made their home on Stonehedge Farm. Al predeceased her on March 16, 2008 after 59 years of marriage, and a daughter, Patricia Sowden, predeceased her in July 1979.

After graduation from nursing school, Irene was on the faculty of Temple University School of Nursing until she resigned to start a family. Irene returned to work at Abington Memorial Hospital and Lower Bucks County Hospital and finished her nursing career at the Wyalusing Valley High School as the school nurse for 16 years, retiring in 1992. Irene obtained her Bachelor’s Degree from Mansfield State College and her Master’s Degree from Marywood College.

Irene was a very active member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Wyalusing. She was also very active with many civic organizations in the Wyalusing area and would help out at Christmas time portraying

Mrs. Claus with her husband, Al, portraying Santa Claus at many events over past years. In past years, she volunteered with the American Red Cross, helping out at bloodmobiles. She was also a former member of the Eagles Mere Country Club.

Surviving are a daughter and sonin law, Donna and James Flader, New Tripoli; two sons and daughter-in-law, James and Carol Sowden, New Hope, Robert R. Sowden, Stroudsburg; sister, Helen Reh, Wilkes-Barre; grandchildren, James Sowden, Fort Worth, TX, Janel Sowden, Sacramento, CA; sister-in-law, Mrs. Ann Scire, Orlando, FL; four great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, Aug. 22 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Basil’s Church, Dushore, with the Rev. Joseph R. Hornick presiding. Interment will be in St. Basil’s Cemetery, Dushore.

Friends and family may call at St. Basil’s on Friday, Aug. 22 from 10 a.m. until the time of the mass.

Arrangements are under the direction of the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home, 206 Water St., Dushore.
