Richard A. (Dick) Krause, 77, of Sheridan, MT, and formerly of Dushore, PA, passed away on Monday, Aug. 25, 2014 at the Gallatin Rest Home, Bozeman, MT from complications of COPD, a debilitating lung disease.
Dick was born Nov. 9, 1936 in Wilmot Township, Bradford County, PA, the son of the late Guy F. and Beatrice Blemle Krause. He attended Dushore schools, but at the age of 15 left school to learn his lifelong career as a mason and carpenter. He was a proud member of the Army National Guard of New York State and was honorably discharged in 1958.
In his early career, he worked with the Cummiskey Construction Company of Elmira Heights, NY. He, along with his brothers and cousins, worked in the construction trade in the Elmira, Horseheads and Painted Post, NY areas for many years. In 1968, he moved his wife, Jane and their young children to a small farm on Gainer Hill Road, outside of Dushore. He and his family raised a few farm animals during their years at the farm and always planted a large garden (knowledge that he gained from his grandfather, Harry Blemle).
Dick continued to work as a mason and carpenter during the rest of his working career while he lived in Dushore. There was a period of time of six years when the construction trade was slow, that he and his son Patrick owned and operated their own truck and flatbed trailer. They were leased to several PA companies and hauled freight coast to coast.
It was during these travels through the Western part of the country and reading hundreds and hundreds of western novels that he gained a “love of the west” and a desire to make his home near the Rocky Mountains and the “old west.” About three years ago, he had the opportunity to “retire” and move to a home on the property of his son Patrick in Sheridan, MT. The two of them enjoyed remodeling the small home and made it comfortable to view the Tobacco Root Mountains, local wildlife and for Dick to continue his gardening passion, but on a smaller scale.
He is survived by his children,
Michael (and wife, Debra) of Dushore, Patrick (and wife, Tina) of Sheridan, MT and Debra (and husband, Jeff) Steeves of Newport, RI; as well as three grandchildren, Adam, Christopher and Brett Krause; three great-grandchildren, Adriana Krause, Peyton Krause and Elsie Krause, along with numerous nephews and nieces. He is also survived by brothers and sister-in-law, Jack (and wife, Rexine) Krause of Fleetwood, Roy Krause of Horseheads, NY; sisters and brother-in-law, Frances Fiester of Laporte, Carol Ann (and husband, Pete) Bomboy of Tunkhannock and Connie Krause of San Diego, CA.
He was predeceased by his brother, Robert Krause of Horseheads, NY and sister and brother-in-law, Betty and John D. McKernan of Wilmot Township.
Per Dick’s request, the funeral services will be private and at the convenience of the family. A local memorial service and picnic will be held at a later date.
Memorial donations may be made to the Sullivan County Library, PO Box 309, Dushore, PA 18614 or the American Legion, Post 452, Mildred, PA 18632.
Arrangements are under the direction of the K&L Mortuary Service of Sheridan, MT.
