Second Large Turbine Moves Through Area

Trip to Last March 18 through 25

A second GE Turbine oversized-load began its journey through Bradford and Sullivan Counties yesterday evening, which will last six days and end in the Berwick area.

Edwards Moving and Rigging, Inc. of Shelbyville, KY, will be using specialized equipment to move the turbine, which measures 345-feet long, 20-feet wide, and 18-feet tall, weighing in excess of 917,000 pounds.

The equipment will be illuminated and moving extremely slow with an escort comprised of linesmen, safety personnel and state policemen.

The oversized load departed from Athens Township on Sunday night via Route 220 and will be moved between the hours of 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. each night to avoid traffic congestion.

The route will consist of Route 220 to Route 6 to Route 239 to Route 487 through Bradford and Sullivan Counties, then continue to Interstate 80 to Route 11 to Route 4002 through Lycoming, Columbia and Luzerne Counties, a state police report says.

The load is expected to arrive at the Moxie Freedom Power Generation Plant in Salem Township in Luzerne County on March 25.

Police say motorists operating in the vicinity of the load are urged to take alternative routes and use extreme caution. The load will be staged at various locations during the trip and will be monitored.

Tampering with and/or interfering with the load while parked could result in enforcement action.
