Alton Garfield Arnold
Alton Garfield Arnold, 93, of Fairdale, PA, died March 13, 2017 at his home surrounded by his family. Born on Oct. 11, 1923 in Fairdale, he was the son of the late Arthur G. and Annis L. (Stevens) Arnold. His wife, Catherine Mae (Honeywell) Arnold, predeceased him in 2001.
A graduate of Rush High School, he was a farmer, was employed by PennDOT for 30 years and the former Bendix Corp.
Alton was an active member of the Fairdale Community United Methodist Church; Rush Volunteer Fire Company; I.O.O.F. Lodge #471, Rush; was past Grand Master; served on the Arthritis Committee; was Eastern Chairman of the Eye Bank; Ernestine Rebekah Lodge #548, Rush; Past Grand Master of Pennsylvania Grand Lodge; member of the Calvin C. Halsey Encampment where he was the Past District Deputy; Fairdale Grange #1157; Susquehanna County Farm Bureau; Pennsylvania Association of Retired State Employees (PARSE); Quality Deer Management Association (QDMA); Republican committee person for Jessup Township; C-Club of Susquehanna County Republican Party; previously active in the Young Republicans National Federation at the local, state and national level; served as a director for the Montrose Area School District for eight years; volunteered with American Cancer Society and Relay for Life; was a Little League baseball coach; Teener League coach; Boy Scout Leader; an avid hunter and pinochle player.
He received numerous awards and recognitions from several of the above-listed organizations for his lifetime work and was an avid fundraiser for many of these organizations.
Survivors include his daughters and sons-in-law, Cindy and Gary Frick of Telford, PA, Jane Arnold and Bob Griffiths of Tunkhannock, Judy Daly of Somerville, TX, and Virginia Cathey of Manchester, NJ; sons and daughters-in-law, Richard and Madeline Arnold of Montrose, Edward and Kim Arnold of Somerville, TX, and Rodger S. Arnold of Albuquerque, NM, 24 grandchildren, Jeffrey Frick, Jennifer (Pat) Strickland, Gary Lee, Jr. (Missy) Frick, Robert (Kristi) Griffiths, Jennifer (Jim) Mochulski, Tony (Brittany) Griffiths, Sean (Reneé) Daly, Shannon (Jay) Neyra, Kellie Cathey, Megan Cathey, Corrine Richardson Stephanie Whitmore, Deborah Mooney, Danielle Arnold, Christopher Fitzpatrick, Katie Fitzpatrick, R. J. Arnold, Renee Arnold, Amanda Arnold, Rhonda (Ramiro) Partillo, Eddie (Traci) Arnold, Donnie Arnold, Hillary Arnold and Olivia Arnold, 28 great-grandchildren, Jerod, Jacob, Gabrillia, Raina, Brayden, Carter, Oliver, Madeline, Kyle, Catherine, Payton, Nevan, Gary Lee, III, Sawyer, Hunter, Gavin, Louiston, Riley, Ryder, Elayna, Max, Robert, Aden, Teagan, Alexis, Aubrey, Jace and Addison, and many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents and wife, he was predeceased by three sisters, Marian Griffis, Leata Shadduck and Ruth Gamble.
Visitation will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday, March 18 at Bartron-Myer Funeral Home, Montrose.
Services will be held on Sunday, March 19 at 2:30 p.m. at the Fairdale Community United Methodist Church, Fairdale.
