Grace Augusta Ely

May 10, 2017

Grace Augusta Ely Grace Augusta Ely On May 10, 2017, Grace Augusta Ely, 85, began her new journey, walking with the Lord. Alzheimer’s may have stolen her mind and body, but it was never strong enough to take away her kind, sweet spirit. She passed away with her family by her side at the Wyalusing Personal Care Home, where she has been a resident for the past six years.

Grace was born on Aug. 18, 1931 in Stowell, PA, the daughter of the late Claude and Edna Randall Brown. She attended school in Jenningsville, and on May 6, 1948, she married Harry Ely. They were married for 51 years and spent their life in Sugar Run until his passing in 1999.

Grace was a loving person who always had a smile and kind word for everyone. She led a very simple life, and although she may not have given fame or fortune to her family, she blessed them far more by instilling priceless values such as the importance of hard work, kindness to others, and, most importantly, love of family. Her favorite saying was “always be kind to everyone.” Her quiet, humble ways made everyone around her feel loved.

She was an amazing cook who never followed a recipe and always had food for others. For many years, her entire family would gather around her table every Friday night to share a meal and laughter. The door was always open to everyone, and the table was always full. No matter how many came, she always had enough food to go around. There were always delicious baked goods on the counter for her family to eat, including coconut cream pie, homemade bread and homemade cinnamon rolls. She was very proud of the flowers that she grew and enjoyed watching the hummingbirds that would come to feed. She also spent many hours rocking babies to sleep, as she was a wonderful mother to her own children and to the many others who came into her life.

She leaves behind her children, Bobby (Joan) Ely of Sugar Run, Bonnie (Joe) Stoddard of Sugar Run, Sandy (Ed) Teel of Wyalusing, Harry Ely, Jr. (Karen Beers) of Wyalusing, Mike (Angie) Ely of Wyalusing, Tammy (Jim) Altemus of Wyalusing and Brenda (Bruce) Insinger of Dushore. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, her brother, Elwood (Edith) Brown of Forkston, as well as many nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Harry; son, Danny, who died at age 11 in 1965; brother, Robert Brown and his wife, Katherine; brother, Raymond Brown and his wife, Nancy; and her brother, Gerald Brown and his wife, Beverly.

As per her request, services will be private for the family. Her care has been entrusted to the Sheldon Funeral Home, 155 Church Street, Wyalusing. The family would like to thank the staff of the Wyalusing Personal Care Home for loving “Gracie” until the end. Their wonderful care was above and beyond expectations, and her family will always be grateful. To the hospice staff of Guthrie, thank you for your support to Grace and her family.

Although she is gone, she leaves behind a legacy of a large, loving family who will keep her memory alive for years to come. She truly was our Amazing Grace.
