A Milan man has been arrested in connection with the death of a 90-year-old woman, who was hit by a car in Tunkhannock on Tuesday night, Sept. 5.

John R. Hanyen, 55, reportedly fled the scene of the incident that occurred in the 200 block of West Tioga Street, where he’d hit Maxine L. Stroka, 90, Tunkhannock, with his Hyundai sedan.

Police were dispatched to the intersection of West Tioga Street and Jayne Road around 8:30 p.m. to investigate the hit-and-run on Stroka, who was taking her garbage out to the street at the time of the crash.

After striking Stroka, Hanyen reportedly pulled over to the side of the road and got out of his vehicle to look around. A witness that was behind Hanyen’s vehicle took down his license plate number before he fled eastbound on West Tioga.

Stroka was taken to Tyler Memorial Hospital where she later succumbed to her injuries.

At approximately 10:40 p.m. that night, a state trooper spotted Hanyen’s vehicle westbound on Route 6 in Tunkhannock Township and conducted a traffic stop. Hanyen was found to be under the influence of alcohol and was taken to Tyler Hospital as well for a legal blood draw.

He was then turned over to Tunkhannock Township Police and interviewed.

Hanyen is now charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, homicide by vehicle while driving under the influence, homicide by vehicle, accidents involving death or personal injury, duty to give information or render aid, immediate notice of a crash to police, reckless driving, careless driving and speeding.

He was arraigned and committed to the Wyoming County Correctional Facility in lieu of $75,000 bail.

Hanyen could face additional charges following the completion of the investigation.
