A fire broke out in the attic of the Vanderpool residence along Cornell Road in Tuscarora Township today, July 11 around 1:15 p.m.

The owner of the home, Nick Vanderpool, said he arrived home from work around the same time and was about to leave again when a friend passing by noticed smoke coming from the roof at the rear of the house.

“I went inside and looked around. I didn’t notice anything and then I heard the crackling coming from the attic,” said Vanderpool.

Multiple fire departments from Laceyville, Wyalusing, Wysox and Wilmot Township responded to the scene as Vanderpool carried family photos and personal items out of the house to safety.

“Everything else is replaceable,” he said.

Vanderpool’s dog also escaped the blaze. Fortunately, his wife and children were not home at the time.

Flames shooting out of the attic and roof were quickly knocked down, but a great deal of smoke damage occurred.

It is unknown at this time how the fire in the attic began.
