One rape is one too many. I

One rape is one too many. I cannot agree more. But, rape doesn’t happen in a vacuum nor does it happen because of immigration status. Rape happens because there is a culture of letting it happen, a culture of shaming victims more than perpetrators and a culture of protection of the powerful over the protection of the less powerful. Rapists choose the vulnerable, those without support, those who don’t understand that their bodies are their own. From high school students, Olympic gymnasts to choir boys rape is SUPPORTED by a system that demands “evidence” from people who don’t know what is happening to them at the time of the crime. People who ( because of trauma) are more easily shamed and blamed than perpetrators who have the “system” on their side. We need a better understanding and rules of evidence where trauma is involved. We don’t want to encourage false accusations but we DO need to support those who don’t understand what happened to them at the time and why they become addicted or find other ways of coping with the trauma of the rape. Put an addict up against a “respectable” rapist, in a court of law, the rapist will win. Very little of this has to do with immigration status In fact immigrants are more vulnerable to being raped than are likely to be rapists. I’m a legal immigrant, I was asked for a date by the man who was interviewing me for the renewal of my visa. I was hit on by my employer who as part of my legal employment was paying my immigration lawyer ( on a loan that was extortion but I didn’t know that at the time!) I put up with all kinds of employment abuse from cancellations of legal federal holiday time to work ( without overtime) and more. I have an educational degree and advice from American friends whose information likely saved me from worse abuse at the time. I’m now a citizen and my vote will be informed by my own lived experience regarding what it means to be an immigrant in this country, and I am white, and seem to have the only accent Americans want, and it was still a not great experience
