Evelyn Wilson

Evelyn Miller Wilson, 81, of Wysox Township, PA, passed away peacefully Wednesday evening, Jan. 30, 2019 at the Dar- Way Health Care Center in Elkland Township, Sullivan County, where she was recently transferred following complications from a stroke.

A life-long resident of Bradford County, Evelyn was born in Sayre on April 26, 1937, the daughter of the late Howard J. Miller and Alice Brown Miller. She grew up in New Albany and was a graduate of New Albany High School with the Class of 1955. Evelyn continued her education at Mansfield State Teachers College where she received her Bachelor of Science degree in Vocational Home Economics in 1959. As a college student, Evelyn was a member of the Kappa Omicron Phi Home Economics Honor Society, was very active in sports and was a member of the Championship Volleyball and Basketball Teams. She later completed graduate courses at Penn State University and Mansfield University.

Evelyn’s career as an educator in Home Economics began in Lewisburg, PA, for a term of three years. She subsequently taught in Wyalusing for three years and completed her teaching career with Sayre High School in 1999 following 22 years of teaching in Sayre and a total of 29 years of teaching with dedication to educating others. During 1974 to 1977, Evelyn served with the Wyalusing Valley and Towanda Area School Districts as a substitute teacher. She also provided instruction and inspiration for Home Economic students during the summer months for the Home on the Range and Reddy Kilowatt programs sponsored by the PA Electric Company in promoting the knowledge, benefits and use of electrical power in the home and everyday needs.

She was always a very active and a devoted supporter of community and civic affairs and was currently serving as resident of the New Albany Community Club and held membership with the Towanda Garden Club, Laddsburg Cemetery Association and the PA Retired Teachers Association. Evelyn served as a judge for pies at the Sullivan County Fair for a number of years and also served as a judge for state and local fairs and community contests.

In early years, Evelyn was a member of the Wysox Presbyterian Church and later became a member of the New Albany Baptist Church. She was past president of American Baptist Women’s Ministries. She enjoyed knitting and shopping for her family and for donations for her church and charities. Evelyn was a very dedicated supporter and participant with the annual Samaritan’s Purse Christian Children’s Box Program benefiting disadvantaged children throughout the world. Evelyn was a long-time member, Past Regent, Vice Regent, former secretary and treasurer of the Mach-wi-hi-lusing Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution. Most of all, Evelyn was a very loving and devoted mother and grandmother who cherished time spent with her family. She especially enjoyed traveling to tractor shows with her son, Mark.

Evelyn’s family includes her son, Mark Meredith Wilson of Monroeton; granddaughter, Paige Meredith Wilson of State College, PA; brother and sister-in-law, Gary and Susan Miller of New Albany; sister-in-law, Virginia Miller of Virginia; five nieces and nephews; 11 great-nieces and nephews and her uncle and aunt, Robert and Ruth Brown of Wyalusing.

In addition to her parents, Evelyn was predeceased by her brother, Robert Miller; nephews, James H. Miller and Douglas Miller, as well as several aunts and uncles.

The family received friends Wednesday, Feb. 6 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Maryott- Bowen Funeral Home, 217 York Avenue, Towanda. A memorial service will be held later on Sunday, Feb. 17 at 1 p.m. at the New Albany Baptist Church with Pastor Terry VanHorn officiating. Visitation will be held from 12:30 to 1 p.m. prior to the service at the church. Interment will be at the convenience of the family in the Laddsburg Cemetery, Albany Township.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that contributions may be directed to the New Albany Baptist Church, 166 Main Street, New Albany, PA 18833 in memory of Evelyn Miller Wilson.
