Chamber To Host Barn Quilt festival
The Greater Wyalusing Chamber of Commerce will host the Quilted Corners of Wyalusing Festival in the area of the Chamber of Commerce building at 20 Main St. in Wyalusing from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 21. The event will feature displays of handmade quilts, chainsaw art, screening of the film “Year of the Barn,” and an exhibit of hit-and-miss engines.
The Blue Heron Art Gallery at the rear of the chamber building will host a traditional antique quilt show, featuring pieces from the personal collection of Patti Shores. Additional arts and crafts will be on display in the Tuscarora Wayne Community Room. Works by other area quilters will be hung in the windows of businesses along Main Street. Chamber representatives will announce the winner of the 2011 Winter Wonderland Quilt Block Challenge sometime during the day.
An informative documentary titled “Year of the Barn” will be shown in the Blue Heron Gallery at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. The hit-and-miss engine exhibit and the chainsaw art will run through the day. The Wyalusing Rainbow Club will sell barbecued chicken dinners, and bag lunches and ice cream will also be available for purchase. Many local eateries will be open to accommodate quilt festival patrons, who will also have opportunities to purchase raffle tickets to win a queen-sized quilt made from the Patriotic Challenge blocks displayed by the chamber last year.
Those who would like to learn more about quilting may enroll in the Carpenter Star Quilting Class, which will be held at the chamber building on Saturday, June 11, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Preregistration is required, and forms will be available at the chamber office.
At anytime during the day on May 21—or at any other time, for that matter—quilt lovers may embark on a self-guided driving tour of area barns and businesses featuring large, colorful wooden “quilts.” Information will also be available for the Barn Quilt Shop Hop, a three-week promotion via which chamber supporters can win prizes and take advantage of coupons for and special bargains at numerous participating businesses at which pre-purchased passports will be stamped.
