From the Superintendent's Desk

By Chester Mummau

Parents and guardians are reminded of the early dismissal of schools on Nov. 23; Wyalusing Valley Elementary School will dismiss at 11:45 a.m. and WVHS will dismiss at noon for the Thanksgiving break. Schools will re-open on Nov. 30. Schools will dismiss at their regular times on Dec. 22 and winter break begins Dec. 23 and ends Jan. 1, 2012.

With the winter season just around the corner, we’ll do our best to make closing or delayed opening decisions by 6 a.m. each day or sooner. We will notify bus drivers first and then relay the information to the local television and radio stations. When feasible, we will use our automated phone system and post closings and delays on the district website. Parents are encouraged to have teenage drivers ride the bus on wintry days, as the buses are one of the safest vehicles on the road.

As the holiday season approaches, please don’t forget to include reading material as part of the gift giving. According to author Jim Trelease, the top winter Olympians come from states where they have the most ice and snow. And reading research shows that children who come from homes with the most print—books, magazines, and newspapers—have the highest reading scores. They also use the library more than those with lower scores. Libraries have the most and best books in the world—all for free. Consider a magazine subscription related to your child’s interests as one of the gifts this season, either in print or online.
