Gridiron for Gals Kicks Off August 28
By David Keeler
If you think Gridiron for Gals is a newly-organized women’s football league, think again.
Gridiron for Gals is an upcoming event where area women are invited to spend part of an afternoon learning the fine points of watching, understanding and enjoying football.
Sponsored by Wyalusing’s Ram Zone and hosted by the Greater Wyalusing Chamber of Commerce, the event will take place at the Chamber’s Tuscarora-Wayne Community Room on Main Street on Aug. 28 from 1 to 4 p.m.
The learning-about-football segment of the event will be conducted by former Wyalusing resident Kellie Goodman Shaffer. Kellie is a graduate of Wyalusing Valley High School and Penn State University. She currently is Executive Director of the Bedford County Chamber of Commerce. Prior to that, she was the Marketing Director of the Allegheny Mountains Convention & Visitors’ Bureau and Game Director of the PSFCA East West All-Star Game. Kellie also spent nearly 20 years as a broadcast journalist in the Johnstown-Altoona-State College television market, most notably serving as Sports Director for WTAJ-TV from 1998-2008.
Learning about football is just part of this fun-filled afternoon. There’s a long and growing list of vendors who plan to take part in the event, including Mary Kay Cosmetics, Tupperware, Pampered Chef, 31 Bags, Sheri McHenry Candles, Lia Sophia and more.
Grovedale and Hidden Creek Wineries will also be there offering samples of their products to those 21 or older.
Vendors will be offering door prizes, and a special prize will be given to the person who shows up in a costume offering the best example of team spirit.
The Ram Zone, Century Farm Meats and the Wyalusing Hotel will provide food.
A booklet containing tailgate recipes and a glossary of football terms will be presented to all those attending.
The P&G Employees Federal Credit Union will be providing free pink football tee shirts to the first 30 people who purchase tickets.
Tickets are on sale now at the Greater Wyalusing Chamber of Commerce office at $10 for adults and $5 for 7-12 graders.
