PennDOT Provides Update on Road Closures
By Rick Hiduk
Heavy rains that fell from Tuesday evening into Wednesday morning hampered flood recovery efforts and added new roads to a list that was finally starting to shrink in the wake of flooding caused by Tropical Storm Lee and Hurricane Irene.
In Wyoming County, Keelersburg Road (SR2007) was closed in both directions between Creamery Road in Northumberland Township and Route 29 in Eaton Township. In Luzerne County, Route 309 South is closed between the on-ramp of I-80 West and Butler Drive in Butler Township. The shoulder of Route 309 North is closed between Butler Drive and the I-80 West exit. Lake Street (SR1047) is closed in both directions between T1016/30 and Kunkle Road in Dallas.
In Bradford County, as of Tuesday afternoon, the bridge on Route 187 in Orwell Township that carries the highway over Wysox Creek, between Lovet Hill and Cemetery Roads about three miles north of Rome, had been reduced to a single lane due to the discovery of flood damage from Tropical Storm Lee to the underwater supports. Temporary stop signs are being placed to control traffic flow in a single lane across the bridge, away from the side of the bridge with the flood damage. Motorists are advised to be alert for changing, temporary traffic patterns at this bridge near North Orwell as repairs are made in the coming weeks.
Route 187 remains one of the most fragmented highways through the county, primarily due to several bridges that have been comprised or have otherwise been deemed impassable. Also in Orwell Township, a bridge two miles north of Rome and a quarter-mile north of Orwell Hill Road remains closed. The detour is Orwell Hill Road to Sugar Cabin Road to LeRaysville Road. In Windham Township, a bridge on Route 187 is out between SR1049 and the New York State line.
There are two closed bridges on Battle Creek Road (SR1055) between Route 187 at Rome to Cotton Hollow Road and one closed bridge on Lake Hill Road (SR1029) between Bumpville Road (SR1046) in Rome Township to North Rome Road in Litchfield Township.
In Sullivan County, where the most excessive damage occurred along the Loyalsock Creek from Dushore to the Lycoming County line, a large section of Route 87 from Ogdonia Road (SR3005) to SR973 at Loyalsockville remains closed to traffic. The Route 487 bridge between Colley Township and Lopez that was washed out two weeks prior to Lee by Hurricane Irene should be permanently replaced before the end of the year. The way around the closure involves using State Routes 118, 42, 220, and 87.
Also in Sullivan County, Christian Camp Road from both intersections with Hunters Road in Laporte and Davidson Township is closed, as is Route 154 from Route 87 at Forksville Borough to Worlds End Road (SR3009) in Forks Township.
Heavy storms were forecasted to roll through the region again on Wednesday evening in advance of a cold front that will drop daytime highs by Saturday into the lower 50s. For updates on road closures, readers can log on to www.511PA.com.
