Rural Artery Shut Down by Fatal Crash
By Rick Hiduk
Wyalusing-New Albany Road (SR2010) in Terry Township was initially closed from early Sunday morning through mid-afternoon as Penelec crews repaired downed power lines and police continued an investigation into a 12:15 a.m. crash that resulted in the death of Devon Miller, 27, Bald Knob, Arkansas. Miller was the passenger in a welding rig truck driven by Joseph Gary Jaster, 27, Grafton, ND, who incurred moderate injuries and was transported to Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre.
State Police at Towanda reported that Jaster apparently lost control of the work truck just east of Benjamin Road, traveled off the east side of SR 2010, struck an embankment, then a utility pole before overturning and coming to rest on its passenger side. Neither man was wearing a seatbelt. Jaster was ejected from the vehicle, and Miller was partially ejected.
Emergency responders from Wyalusing and Wysox were assisted by PennDOT employees at the scene. A preliminary investigation of the accident suggests that both high speed and alcohol were factors. Miller was pronounced dead at the scene by Bradford County coroner Jim Bowen.
PennDOT closed Wyalusing-New Albany Road in the area through Sunday morning, and traffic was detoured in the interim via Route 87, Tupach Pond Road, and Marsh Road. State police closed the stretch of roadway again on Tuesday from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. for another reconstruction of the crash.
