Shirley Jackson Draws Crowd at 100th Birthday Party

Even family members were pleasantly surprised at the number of people who showed up Saturday, Feb. 26, at the Towanda Gun Club to wish Wyalusing's Shirley Jackson well on the occasion of her 100th birthday. The actual milestone date was two days later on Monday, Feb. 28.

Family reported that more than 150 people attended the birthday party, including all of her three living children and a good number of her 15 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren. The guest of honor, during a brief program, was asked if there was anything she had to say after opening remarks by family members and quickly responded: "No, I think that I've said enough for the past 100 years."

Among the guests who attended was one of her younger friends, 97-year-old Jane Carey, of Camptown. Rep. Tina Pickett attended to present a citation honoring Shirley from the Pennsylvania House of Representatives. She also received a citation from the U.S. House of Representatives, compliments of Congressman Thomas Marino.

A feature on Shirley, her life and some of her favorite memories was published in last week's issue of the Rocket-Courier.

There were three hours of festivities, and the family extended its thanks to all who attended to honor Shirley on her milestone day.
