Wyalusing Veterans Honored
By David Keeler
Two members of Wyalusing American Legion Post 534 were honored by the post in a brief ceremony held on Thursday evening, Dec. 8.
Lewis H. Reinhart, a Korean War Army veteran, received a citation honoring his 50 years of continuous, dedicated service to the American Legion. The citation was presented by Post 534 Commander Benjamin Chamberlin on behalf of the American Legion’s National Commander, Fang Wong.
Robert F. Oliver, Jr., who serves as Post 534’s Sergeant at Arms, was recognized for his quick action in responding to an emergency that resulted in saving the life of a fellow Legionnaire. The incident took place on Nov. 5, 2011, during the post’s Veterans’ Day celebration. When Oliver, a Desert Storm veteran who served with the 82nd Airborne, noticed that one of his comrades was choking on a piece of food that had become lodged in his throat, he acted quickly and administered the Heimlich Maneuver. Although it took repeated attempts, Oliver persisted until the victim’s airway was cleared and he was able to breathe.
In recognition of his lifesaving response, Oliver was presented the American Legion’s Silver Medal of Merit.
