Thomas Merritt, 29, Mehoopany, faces charges for burglary, criminal trespass, theft, and criminal mischief for an incident dated Oct. 12. Police allege that Merritt entered the Tuscarora Township, Bradford County, residence of Lidia and Giovan Monterosso between 9:30 a.m. and 9:30 p.m. that day and removed numerous items, including valuable jewelry, social security cards, birth certificates, and passports, a flat screen television, a Wii games console and several computer games. The total value of the missing items was estimated at $10,580. There was also an additional $400 damage to the victims’ door area, including the window and doorframe. Merritt was apprehended by state police at Tunkhannock and a Wyoming County detective, who were on Oct. 12 at the Laceyville residence of Desiree Daff because Merritt had reportedly failed to appear for sentencing for a separate incidence in Wyoming County on that day. Some of the items reported missing from the Monterosso residence were reportedly found to be in Merritt’s possession, as were numerous other suspicious items, in addition to a bag of marijuana that Merritt allegedly told police he had just purchased on Spring Hill. Merritt contended that the other items were not stolen and belonged to a friend named Chris, with whom he was to travel to Philadelphia to trade them for heroin. Daff reportedly admitted to authorities that she had provided transportation for Merritt earlier that day because he had been drinking and she did not want to let him use her vehicle. She maintained that she was not aware of all of his actions nor his intentions, but became suspicious when he started placing the peculiar mix of items in the backseat of her car. Merritt faces a Nov. 29 preliminary hearing.
Michael John Dreisch, 42, RR1 Stevensville, faces charges for allegedly writing a bad check in the amount of $199.60 at Flynn Beverage in Wysox Township on Feb. 4 and did not respond to efforts by the business to rectify the matter. A preliminary hearing has been set for Dec. 6.
