Kristopher Deroy Benkoski, 33, Wyalusing RR2, faces charges for theft by deception and criminal attempt after police allege that he made a fake deposit at an ATM at First Liberty Bank in Wyalusing on May 17 and then took a withdrawal against it. Bank officials provided police with copies of the statements and a photo of the defendant taken from surveillance footage. Benkoski, who faced a May 25 preliminary hearing, allegedly confessed to police that he committed the crime because he needed money to pay for medical bills.
Christopher Lee God, 27, no address supplied, faces charges for retail theft from an incident dated May 21 at about 10:30 p.m. God is alleged to have entered the Dandy Mini Mart in Monroeton and removed several items from the shelves that he hid on his person, before paying for a slice of pizza and an apple juice. A neighbor had phoned the store manager to report a suspicious looking person who was acting “goofy” before entering the store. The same witness later reported that he saw the defendant, who was identified with the use of surveillance video, tear the price tag off a pair of sunglasses as he exited the store and consume a handful of pills. The manager had an employee write down the license plate number of God’s vehicle as he drove away. In addition to the sunglasses and the package of No Doz, the defendant was also observed stealing snack items—$20.57 worth of merchandise. God’s preliminary hearing is set for June 1.
