Harriet Eloise Ely Girven, 82

Harriet Eloise Ely Girven, 82 of Sugar Run, PA passed away Monday morning, Sept. 26, 2011 at the Towanda Memorial Hospital with her loving family at her side.

Born on March 5, 1929, she was a daughter of the late Arthur and Hazel Tuttle Ely. She attended the Wyalusing Valley High School. She married Calvin Girven of Sugar Run on June 8, 1946. She helped around the farm and raised her family. As the children got older she worked for a couple years at Betty's Diner. Harriet then went to work as a rural mail carrier for Sugar Run, from which she retired after more than 20 years of service. In her retirement she traveled extensively, having been to Nova Scotia, Alaska, and all over the continental US on bus trips.

She was a member of the Hollenback United Methodist Church, a lifetime member of the Wilmot Fire Company, and a past member of Wilmot Township Board of Election. She loved working in her flower-beds, reading, and watching the hummingbirds. Her greatest joy in life was spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Surviving are sons and daughters-in-law, David (Nicole) Girven, Chad, Africa, Kevin (Barb) Girven, Sugar Run, Randy (Connie) Girven, Sugar Run, Tim (Betsy) Girven, Sugar Run; daughters and sons-in-law: Dawn (Karl) Snyder, Wyalusing, Kathy (John) Braun, Wyalusing;

grandchildren: Kimberly (Tracy) Moon, Springville, Adam (Caralee) Girven, Alburtis, PA Fatime (Abde) Akhouna, Chad, Africa, Koufra Girven, Albuquerque, NM, Daniel Girven, Chad, Africa, Christopher Hansel, Media, A. Phillip (Bernarda) Hansel, Norristown, Justin Girven, Sugar Run, Ryan Girven, Sugar Run, Derek (Jennie) Girven, Marion Heights, Jason (Dana) Girven, Sugar Run, Jeremy (Rene) Girven, Fayetteville, NC, Brett (Kiley) Girven, West Lafayette, IN, Sarah (Steven) Brunell, San Diego, CA; great-grandchildren, McKenzi, Logan, Karima, Koufra, Ahmir, Batoul, Oliver, Marayna, Arabella, Ivy, Alexis, Calvin, Aiden, and Samantha; brother, Carl (Marlene) Ely, Clay, NY; sister, Carleen (Pete) Fitzgerald, Sugar Run; sisters-in-law, Lelia (Glenn) Custer, Tunkhannock, Grace Ely, Wyalusing and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Calvin Girven; her twin brother, Harry Ely; brother, Donald Ely; sisters, Emogene Adams, and Laura Sabonski and granddaughter, Hawa Girven.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, Sept. 30 at 10 a.m. at P. Dean Homer Funeral Home, 1 Grovedale Lane, Wyalusing, with the Rev. Rich Vieldhouse, presiding. Following the service interment will be in Wyalusing Cemetery.

Friends may call on Thursday, Sept. 29, from 7 to 9 p.m. and on Friday from 9 a.m. until the time of the service, at the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home.
