Jonathan H. John McClain, 64
Mr. Jonathan H. "John" McClain, 64 of PO Box 262, Byrd Hill Rd., Meshoppen, PA, passed away on Friday morning, March 11, 2011 at the Community Medical Center in Scranton, from injuries sus-tained in a fall at a friend's home, near Meshoppen on Thursday evening. He was born in Meshoppen, on Jan. 9, 1947, the son of the late George E. and Grace Kelly McClain.
Growing up in Meshoppen, he stayed and lived most of his entire life near the family homestead on Byrd Hill Road. He served his country with the U.S. Army during the Vietnam Conflict, serving one tour in Vietnam. After returning to the Meshoppen area after his service to his country, John was a self-employed carpenter and was also employed by Meshoppen Township with road maintenance, retiring in 2009.
Mr. McClain was a member of the Meshoppen Rod and Gun Club where he did a lot of maintenance and service to the club. In his spare time, he enjoyed watching and feeding birds.
Survivors include his long-time companion, Cindy Decker of Byrd Hill Rd., Meshoppen; his seven children, Meggan McClain, Shania McClain, David McClain, and Amber McClain, all at home, Zachariah McClain of Meshoppen, Mariah McClain of Meshoppen and Georgia Kelly McClain and her husband, Thomas Finkler of Laceyville; five grandchildren, Alicia Finkler and Thomas Finkler, Jr., both of Laceyville, Alyssa Hollister, of Meshoppen, McKala McClain and LeighAnna McClain, both of Westminster, SC. John is also survived by a sister, Katherine McClain of Gettysburg; seven brothers, James (Barbara) McClain of Whippany, NJ, George "Joe" (Ellen) McClain of Laceyville, Wayne (Beverly) McClain of Ripley, OH, Kirby (Joanne) McClain of Ulster, Matthew McClain of Tunkhannock, Edward McClain of Laceyville and Michael (Bette) McClain of Meshoppen and several nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, and cousins.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, David McClain.
Memorial services will be held on Saturday, March 19 at 1:30 p.m. at the Meshoppen Rod and Gun Club, Byrd Hill Rd., Meshoppen, with Rev. Patricia Newhart, a family friend officiating. Family and friends may call Saturday afternoon, March 19 at the club before the service from 12:15 to 1:15 p.m. Interment will be at a later date at the convenience of the family.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be sent to the Peoples Neighborhood Bank, PO Box 129, Meshoppen, PA 18630, to help cover John's medical expenses.
Arrangements were made through the Sheldon Funeral Home, Main St., Meshoppen.
