Margaret "Peggy" Jenkinson Johnson, 85,


Margaret "Peggy" Jenkinson Johnson, 85, widow of Dr. Elting C. Johnson of 216 York Ave., Towanda, PA passed away peacefully Tuesday morning, May 3, 2011 at her home with her children by her side.

“Peggy,” as she was known by her family and friends, was born in Spring Lake, NJ on Nov. 23, 1925, the daughter of Orlo B. and Frances H. Magill Jenkinson. She was a graduate of Point Pleasant Beach High School in New Jersey and received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Psychology at Bucknell University, Lewisburg, graduating in 1947. She was a member of the Chi Omega Sorority. While attending Bucknell, she met her future husband, Elting C. Johnson of Towanda, and they were later married on May 27, 1948.

In early years, Peggy was employed by the Institute of Living Psychiatric Center in Hartford, CT. The Johnsons resided in Sayre for several years while Elting was serving his residency at the Robert Packer Hospital and later moved first to LeRaysville and then to Towanda where Dr. Johnson practiced medicine for many years.

Peggy loved spending time with her family, traveling, playing tennis, reading, golf and bridge.

She was a member of the Towanda Country Club, Quarry Glen and the Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, Towanda.

Surviving are: her children, Lynn Kingsley Johnson of Bath, NY, Dr. William Elting Johnson of Montpelier, VT, Karen Frances Johnson of Towanda, Leigh Ann Johnson and husband, Tom Wright of Venice, CA; grandchildren, Jay, Megan, Casey, Rae and Eamon; great-granddaughter, Jade Watkins; sister, Barbara Jenkinson of Portsmouth, NH; sisters-in-law, Ruth Pense Cathleen Jenkinson; nieces, Julie Sackett, Sylvia Clark, Cindy Boyer and Elizabeth Johnson; nephews, Charles Jenkinson and Tom Johnson; special friends and caregivers, Tracy Wrisley and Cathy Weed. In addition to her parents, Peggy was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Dr. Elting C. Johnson on May 23, 2001; brother, Orlo Jenkinson; niece, Kim Jenkinson and nephews, Craig Jenkinson and David Greenspan.

A private memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family. There are no calling hours. Interment will be in the Oak Hill Cemetery, Towanda.

The family suggests that contributions may be directed to the Towanda Public Library, 104 Main St., Towanda, PA 18848; to Memorial Hospital, 1 Hospital Drive, Towanda, PA 18848 or to Guthrie Hospice, 1 Guthrie Square, Sayre, PA 18840 in Margaret J. Johnson’s memory.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Maryott-Bowen Funeral Home, 217 York Ave., Towanda.
