Mr. Walter L. Manley, 86
Mr. Walter L. Manley, 86, of New Albany, PA passed away on Thursday, June 30, 2011 at the Highlands Care Center, Laporte, with his loving family at his side.
Born July 5, 1924 in Towanda, he was a son of the late S. Taylor and Eleanor Clark Manley. He graduated from the Towanda High School. After graduation, he served in the U.S. Army during WWII with the Field Artillery Battalion; he earned the rank of Corporal and served in the Pacific Theater of Operations. After being discharged, he returned home and married the former Helen Marie McMahon of Albany Valley on Nov. 9, 1946. Helen predeceased him on Dec. 27, 2010 after 64 years of marriage.
The Manleys farmed in Albany Valley and also worked as a mechanic for the Farm Dunn’s Garage and the Glenn Plott’s Garage in Dushore. In 1965, he and Helen started Manley’s Garage in New Albany. In retirement, they spent their winters in Florida. In their younger years, they enjoyed square dancing, reading and traveling.
Walt was a member of St. Basil's Church, Dushore, and a member of the Holy Name Society. He was a member of Wyalusing Post #534 American Legion.
Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, W. David and Reta Manley of New Albany, Burton and Sheila Manley of New Albany; three daughters and sons-in-law, Bonnie and Michael Fox of New Albany, Joni and Brent Raupers of Ulster, Dina Manley and Neal Gallagher of Tannersville; sisters, Mary Henson, Florence Williamson and Vera Rogers; eight grandchildren: Nichole (Angelo) Pedro, Wade (Jill) Manley, Kristin (Brad) Vasey, Natalie (Todd) Salsman, Casey (Mandy) Townsend, Karly, Kelsy and Keegan Peterson; seven great-grandchildren, Jordan, Danelle, Nicholas and Connor Salsman, Maggie Goodrich, Cooper and Layla Helen Manley.
He was predeceased by sisters, Beatrice Cashdollar, Catherine McRonald, Frances Noble and Matie Stevens; brothers, Samuel Manley, Carl Manley, Thomas Manley, Charles Manley and George Rockwell.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 2 at 10:30 a.m. at the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home, 206 Water St., Dushore, with the Rev. Joseph R. Hornick, his pastor, presiding. Interment will be in St. Basil's Cemetery.
Friends may call on Friday, July 1 at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. and on Saturday morning from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service.
Graveside military services will be conducted by members of Wyalusing Post #534 American Legion, Wyalusing, and the A.J. Bird Memorial Post #384, New Albany.
