Mrs. Stella Szmurkowski Love, 85,
Mrs. Stella Szmurkowski Love, 85, of 422 SR 3002, Laceyville, PA (South Auburn), passed away at The Highlands Care Center in Laporte early Sunday morning, May 15, 2011. She had been a resident there for the last three months. Born in Scranton, on Jan. 21, 1926, she was the daughter of the late John and Sophie Chomentowski Szmurkowski.
Spending most of her earlier life in the Meshoppen area, she was a graduate of the Meshoppen High School, Class of 1944. For forty years, Stella was a devoted and loving wife of Levi D. Love, who passed away on April 18, 1987. During that time, she was very active being a farmer’s wife, taking care of her family and home, along with doing a lot of the farmwork right alongside her husband.
Growing up in the Catholic faith, Stella was very devoted and active in St. Joachim’s Roman Catholic Church, and she was a member of its Altar and Rosary Society. She was also a member of the South Auburn Grange #1188.
Throughout the years, she was always involved in activities with her children, grandchildren and her extended families of her brothers and sisters.
Surviving are her children, Jeanne and Jack Sible of Laceyville and Judy and Tom Keeney of Meshoppen; her four grandchildren, Lee and Donna Keeney of Mt Airy, MD, Ryan and Khesly Keeney of Springville, Jack Sible of Laceyville and Melissa and Kirk Strope of Meshoppen, as well as her two great-granddaughters, Paige Keeney and Piper Keeney, and also a great-grandchild that is due to arrive any day. She is also survived by two sisters, Edna Murphy of Lady Lakes, FL and Lillian Degnan of Greece, NY; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Henry and Cynthia Love of Vestal, NY and her many nieces and nephews.
Besides her husband and her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Edward Smurkowski, Joseph Smurkoski and Stanley Szmurkowski, and four sisters, Adeline Marotta, Jean Gutkowski, Genevieve Burke and Stephanie Szmurkowski.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday morning, May 19 at 9 a.m. at the Sheldon Funeral Home, Main St., Meshoppen, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. from St. Joachim's Roman Catholic Church in Meshoppen, with Fr. Joseph Manarchuck of the church officiating.
Interment will be in St. Joachim’s Cemetery.
Family and friends called at the funeral home on Wednesday afternoon, May 18, from 2 to 5 p.m. and on Thursday morning from 8:30 a.m. until the time of the service. A Rosary was recited at 5 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon.
