Rev. Burtt E. Sweet, 85,
Rev. Burtt E. Sweet, 85, of Sheephead Point, Hammond, NY, passed away at his home late Christmas morning surrounded by his loving family.
Burtt was born on March 8, 1926, in Scranton, PA, the son of Rev. George L. and Ethel S. Walton Sweet. He graduated from Camptown High School in Camptown, PA and then entered the United States Navy in 1944. He attended Wyoming Seminary in Kingston, graduating in 1946. He went on to receive his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1950 from Lycoming College in Williamsport, and finally earned his Master of Divinity degree from Drew University, Madison, NJ in 1955.
Rev. Sweet married Marilyn F. Moore on June 5, 1955 at the Drew University Theological Chapel with Rev. Dr. Fred G. Holloway officiating. Rev. Sweet served at 16 churches during his career, moving to Sheephead Point after his retirement. The churches include: Pine Street Methodist Church, Williamsport; Wallis Run Charge Methodist Church, Wallis Run Charge; Rome Methodist, North Orwell Union and Orwell Federated, where he served as Pastor Emeritus, Rome; Narrowsburg, NY and Milanville, PA Methodist Churches; Newark Valley Methodist Church, Newark Valley, NY; Tabernacle Methodist Church, where he served as Associate Pastor, Binghamton, NY; Vestal Center Methodist Church, Vestal, NY; Clarks Summit United Methodist, Clarks Summit; Boulevard United Methodist Church, Binghamton, NY; Oneonta District Methodist Churches, where he served as the district superintendent for six years, Oneonta, NY; Shavertown United Methodist Church, Shavertown; Fairview United Methodist Church, serving for six years, Binghamton, NY, and Castle Creek and Glen Castle United Methodist Church, where he retired, Castle Creek and Glen Castle, NY.
He was an avid fisherman, boater and trumpet player.
Survivors include his wife, Marilyn; his sons, Burtt E., II of Liverpool, NY and Daniel G. and his wife, Lynne of Williamstown, NY; his daughters and their husbands, Rev. Deborah and Jon Earthrowl of Salem, NY and Rev. Rebekah Sweet and Birney Kellogg of Gouverneur, NY; his brothers, George R. Sweet of Johnson City, NY and Walter D. of Walton, KY; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren and his beloved feline, Zandi. He is predeceased by a sister, Ethel S. Russell, and a brother, Harold, who died as an infant.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, Jan. 1 at noon at the Reformed Church of the Thousand Isles. In addition, a Service of Remembrance will be held in the summer of 2012 at the family home at Sheephead Point, with a date to be determined.
