Thelma Burton Edsell Shook, 90,


Thelma Burton Edsell Shook, 90, of Orwell Twp., PA passed away Sunday evening, Aug. 7, 2011 at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Vicky and William Jones in Friendsville, following declining health.  Born Nov. 23, 1920 in Wilkes-Barre, she was the daughter of Spence and Janet Sharp Burton. At a young age, she moved with her family to Brushville, where she grew up on the family farm and attended LeRaysville High School.  

In 1937, Thelma married Floyd K. Edsell and they resided in Harrisburg for several years before moving back to LeRaysville.   Thelma was employed by GTE Sylvania in Towanda for 25 years and also assisted her husband in the operation of their Texaco Gas Station in LeRaysville.  She moved to Allis Hollow following her husband, Floyd’s death on Jan. 18, 1969.  She was later married to Robert W. Shook, who preceded her in death on Jan. 17, 1985.

Thelma was a member of the LeRaysville Chapter Order of Eastern Star. She will be remembered by family and friends as a very ambitious person who enjoyed working.

She is survived by her daughters, Vicky Jones and husband, William Jones, Jr. of Friendsville, Kim Purtell of Johnson City, NY; stepdaughter, Gail Williams of Williamsport; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; a brother-in-law, Bernard Edsell of Brushville; sister-in-law, Vivian Edsell of Rome; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to her parents and husbands, she was preceded in death by her oldest son, Floyd C. Edsell on Oct. 18, 1996 and John B. Edsell on April 27, 2010.

Funeral services will be private.  There are no calling hours.  Interment will be in the East Herrick Cemetery, Herrick Twp.

The family suggests that contributions may be directed to the American Cancer Society, Bradford Unit, 1948 East Third Street, Williamsport, PA 17701-3945 in Thelma’s memory.  

The Maryott-Bowen Funeral Home of Towanda is assisting Thelma’s family with arrangements.
