Thelma Overpeck Roberts, 104
Thelma Overpeck Roberts passed away on Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2011 at The Haven at North Hills assisted living home in Pittsburgh. She had celebrated her 104th birthday on Aug. 21.
Thelma was born in Towanda on Aug. 21, 1907, the third child of John and Lucinda Overpeck. She grew up on a farm near Herrickville, graduated Valedictorian from Towanda High School in 1924, Mansfield Normal School in 1926 and George Washington University in 1959. She taught school in NJ and VA and married John C. Roberts on June 23, 1929. Her husband of 50 years passed away in 1980.
After retiring from the Arlington County (VA) School System, Thelma spent her summers on the farm on which she was raised in Herrickville. She attended the Herrickville United Methodist Church while in the area, and enjoyed the sewing club and playing bridge. During those same years she spent winter months in Green Valley, AZ. She kept her home of 60 years in Arlington, VA until 2000, at which time she moved to be near her daughter in Pittsburgh.
Thelma is survived by her children Joan and Jay, and by grandchildren Melanie Horne and Robert Bradley.
Funeral services will be held at the Schellhass Funeral Home, 388 Center Ave, Pittsburgh, on Saturday, Sept. 10.
