Firefighters Douse Blaze at Welles Mill
Firefighters from Wyalusing and Wilmot Township responded to a blaze at Welles Mill today at about 3:30 p.m. in the rubble of one of the former mill’s buildings that had been razed earlier in the day.
Today’s fire took place almost 30 years from the fire that destroyed the main mill and other buildings on May 26, 1981.
An excavator had demolished what had been the mill’s feed store earlier today. It was empty and unused and the cause of the fire is unknown. There was no power connected to the building.
The demolition crew had shut down for the day and left the job site but returned when they heard of the fire to move a truck and other equipment parked nearby.
Firefighters contained the fire to the area of the razed building and there was no other damage.
The mill itself is now the only building left standing in the complex and that is expected to be demolished in the near future.
