Ground Broken For New Park in Towanda
By Rick Hiduk
Sen. Gene Yaw said that he was honored to be the first person to break ground for the Bradford County Veterans’ Memorial Park on Main Street in Towanda in the area of the Route 6 bridge across the Susquehanna River from Wysox Township on Nov. 9. Temperatures were unseasonably mild as shovels held by Yaw and other dignitaries hit the dirt during the late morning ceremony.
Project founder Joe Doherty called the event a “pivotal time for our association,” in reference to the board members who have worked over the past two years to solicit public, corporate, and political support for the park, which will tie together loose ends of an existing park next to the Progress Building and the borough’s Riverfront Park when it is completed.
A recent grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources was the catalyst for the groundbreaking, which will be followed by construction of a pathway under the bridge and the installation of a new parking lot along the Farley Connector from the Merrill Parkway to Main Street.
