New Lopez Bridge Opens
PennDOT Engineering District 3-0’s aggressive schedule is paying off with today's opening of the new Route 487 Bridge at Lopez in Sullivan County, less than four months since the road's closing.
Hurricane Irene's floodwaters in late August washed out its predecessor, the 79-year-old, single-span, steel I-beam bridge over Loyalsock Creek just off Main Street in the village.
The detour is now lifted.
PennDOT developed an emergency contract to fast-track the bridge's replacement on this traffic route in Sullivan County.
Bids were opened in early October, with the contract being awarded to G.A. & F.C. Wagman, Inc. for $1.8 million.
Final paving and an epoxy overlay of the bridge deck will take place in the spring of 2012 when the weather improves, along with other weather-sensitive items like final grading and seeding. The remaining work required under the contract will be done under traffic, with flagging.
