Auto Racing Season Set to Open
While you wouldn’t know it during this year without a spring, the area auto racing season is just days away from roaring to life.
Five Mile Point Speedway in Kirkwood, NY, is ready to drop the green flag, weather permitting, on the 2011 campaign Sunday, April 10.
The show, which starts at 4 p.m., includes appearances by the Race of Champion Sportsman and Street Stocks. Also racing will be 600 c.c. Modifieds and Lightning Cats.
The track hosted a pair of practice sessions last Saturday with 40 teams showing up. The new surface held up to the test, according to the track.
On April 16, the Modifieds will be featured for the Southern Tier Open.
The track’s 61st season will officially open with points racing on April 30, including the weekly divisions—Modifieds, Sportsman, Street Stocks, IMCA Modifieds, Lightning Cats, Kiddie Cats, A League of Their Own and Figure Eights.
To get local fans in the mood, Towanda will host two separate car show events this weekend.
On April 8, the First Friday festivities, which were postponed because of weather last week, will include selected cars from Dunn Hill 2 Speedway in Monroeton and Wyalusing Valley Motorsports Park in Homets Ferry. The cars will be on display around the Bradford County Courthouse from 5 to 8 p.m.
Two days later, a race car show will also be held in Towanda outside Hurley’s Market, from noon to 5 p.m.
Penn Can Speedway in Susquehanna, PA, will open for the season with the “Can Opener” on April 22, featuring Modifieds, Sportsman, Street Stocks, Four Cylinders and Factory Stocks.
Practice sessions are slated for April 10, 15 and 17.
Dunn Hill 2 will hold practice sessions on April 15, 17 and 22 ahead of the scheduled season opener on April 29.
Regular divisions at Dunn Hill are IMCA Modifieds, Street Stocks, Mini Stocks, Front Wheel Drive Four Cylinders and Factory Stocks.
Wyalusing Valley Motorsports Park will hold practices on April 30 and May 1. The April 30 sessions will also include the SportsMan Teamwork Challenge. Three drivers will share one kart for three 33-lap stints.
The track will open the 2011 season on May 7 at 5:30 p.m.
Regular kart divisions include Rookie Purple, Novice Blue and Junior Gold. There will also be SportsKid as well as SportsMan divisions. Other kart divisions include Stock Clones, Animals and Flatheads.
The small cars competing on a regular basis include 270 Microsprint and 600 Microsprint, as well as Junior and Senior Slingshots. There will also be some appearances by the Stage One Modifieds.
Chemung Speedrome in Chemung, NY, will open on May 6 with a show including Modifieds, Super Stocks, Four Cylinders, Legends and Bandoleros.
An open practice is slated for May 1.
Skyview Drags, located in Tioga Center, NY, will have three test and tune dates ahead of the May 7 opener. The test dates are April 23 and 30 and May 6.
Regular divisions competing at the 1/8-mile drag strip include Junior Drags, Teen Championship Racing, Street Trophy, Street Money, Bike/Sled, Pro and Super Pro.
Shangri-La II Speedway, also in Tioga Center, will conduct tests on May 13-14 ahead of a Race of Champion Modified appearance on May 15. Also competing at the track will be Street Stocks, Late Models and Sport Modifieds.
