Blizzard Softball Finishes 3-2 At Eastern Nationals
The BC Blizzard 14U ASA Fastpitch team from Bradford County just returned from Charles County, MD where they competed in the 14U Class “B” Eastern National Championships Aug. 2 to 7. They competed with teams that were in the top of their class in this division.
The championship rounds started with a win of 11-1 against the Midway Orange Crush team from Delaware. This win brought them up against Northeast Lightning where their defense continued to hold strong and their offense brought in the runs with another 11-1 win against Northeast Lightning from New York. Continuing in the winner’s bracket, the Blizzard team’s next challenge was team Revolution, the Maryland State Champions. It was a hard fought battle as the Blizzard was in the lead with one run until the final innings where they gave up two runs.
This loss of 2-1 was the first loss in a double elimination tournament. This loss forced them to move into back-to-back play, where it was a battle of endurance with the high temperatures and exhaustion from a hard fought battle against Revolution. The battle took an unexpected turn when the second at-bat of the game occurred and player Kasey Devoir took a direct hit to her knee, taking her completely out of the game. Devoir was the shortstop for the Blizzard team and this forced a change in their lineup. This hurdle did not stop the girls and they rose to the challenge and brought down Victory Young Guns, New York, 11-8.
Continuing on with the third consecutive game and the shortstop still out of the game, the Blizzard team met the Chatham Rage Black team from NY. The Blizzard was winning the game 10-6 until the home team, Chatham, had their final bats. The Blizzard gave up four runs, tying the game to force an international tiebreaker. During the tiebreaker, the Blizzard was unable to get their runner home while the Chatham Rage Black brought their runner in, forcing the Blizzard out of competition with this second loss. This loss put the Blizzard as seventh overall in the Eastern National Championships. This seventh place finish added to the many successes this team has had this season. Championship wins were the Fourth of July Explosion in NY and the Special Tees in NY. Accompanying those wins were second place in the Lewistown Eastern National Qualifier, sixth place Class B Sunbury State Championships, and second place at the Sunbury "B" Fastpitch Invitational. This team will move up this next year to 16U.
