Camptown Races Still On

Despite the September flooding of last week, the 46th running of the Camptown Races will be held as scheduled on Saturday, Sept. 17.

However, while the 10K run, which begins at 10 a.m., is still on, the other festivities, including the chicken barbecue, have been canceled.

Rachel Murphy, wife of race director Mike Murphy, says the course, including the challenging trail section, is “fine.”

“Mike and I have run it twice (since the flood),” she said, noting that the trail usually needs a little upkeep before the race every year.

“We had some (high school) seniors up with chain saws to clear it.”

The storm did slightly affect one part of the trail section near the top of the hill where rocks were moved onto it.

“We’ll tell the runners at the pre-race meeting they will need to stay to the right. It’s good trail there,” Murphy said.

Race-day registration begins at 8 a.m. The fee is $10.
