Eighteen Bradford County Athletes Achieve at Special Olympics Pennsylvania Summer Games

 

Eighteen athletes from Bradford County participated in the Special Olympics Pennsylvania Summer Games held June 9 through June 11. The 40th Anniversary of Special Olympics in Pennsylvania marked “Celebrating Forty Years of Transforming Lives.” To honor Special Olympics Pennsylvania, a 150-mile Olympic torch run of athletes and support finished at Medlar Field, Penn State University during the opening ceremony where the Olympic torch was ignited. A grand array of fireworks finished the celebration on opening night.

At the Summer Games, each Bradford County Special Olympian competed in bowling; track and field; or aquatics. In the Special Olympics team bowling competition, Cathy Griebel, Kristina Morse, Janice Peck and Molly Smith, from Martha Lloyd Community Services, brought home silver medals. In individual bowling, David Bartlett, from Canton High School, received a gold medal and Alex Brown, Troy High School, took home silver.

Four female athletes from Bradford County brought home numerous awards in the track and field events. Cathy Jo Insinger, who attends Serve, Inc., received a gold medal in the 100M run, fourth place in the 200M run and a participant’s ribbon for the long jump. Karen Squitiere, from Martha Lloyd Community Services, garnered a silver medal in the 100M walk, a fifth place in the 400M walk and a participant ribbon in the 100M run. Christina Cybulak, representing Sayre High School, received a gold medal in the 200M run, gold in the 100M run and a fourth place in the 400M run. Wynter Vanderpool, from Towanda High School, earned a gold medal in the long jump, a silver medal in the 100M run and a silver medal in the 200M run. Representing Troy Middle School, Sierra McKay won a silver medal in the 400M run, fifth place in the 200M run and fourth place in the long jump.

Six male athletes from Bradford County competed in track and field. Tyler Crossett, from Sayre High School won a gold medal in the 200M run, a second gold in the 400M run and a silver medal in the 100M run. Representing Athens High School, Devon Harris received a bronze medal in the 400M run, sixth place in the 100M run and a participant ribbon for the long jump. From Troy High School, Michael Rogers brought home a silver medal in the 400M run, a seventh place in the 200M run and a participant's ribbon in the long jump. Three athletes, from Towanda High School, competed in track and field at the Summer Games: Robert Mapes won a bronze medal in the 400M run and a participant's ribbon in the long jump; Brandon Walters received a silver medal in the 200M run, a second silver in the 400M run and a participant's ribbon in the long jump; and Andrew Gee placed third in the long jump and fourth place in the 200M run and 400M run.

In the aquatics competition, Elizabeth Porter, from Sayre High School, received a gold medal in the 400-yard freestyle race, a silver medal in the 200- yard freestyle race and a silver medal in the 100-yard butterfly.

Coaches for the Bradford County athletes included: Shirley Allis, Brian Covey, Howard Moore, Millie Moore, Sandy Navone and Cynthia Porter. Trudy Kepner served as the Head of Delegation for Bradford County.

All 18 Olympic athletes represented their schools and county well at the Special Olympics Pennsylvania Summer Games.
