Elk Lake Golfers Open Season

First-year head coach Mary Hotchkiss is relying on a trio of veterans to lead the Elk Lake golf squad into its opener today at Carbondale.

Senior Alex Kipar and juniors Derek Johnston and Kirk Lunger are expected to have strong seasons for the Warriors in the Lackawanna North race.

Hotchkiss, who was an assistant for two years for her husband, Robert, before taking the helm this season, expects huge things from Kipar, a starter since he was a freshman.

"I think Alex is going to be very strong. He's more confident this year."

She also hopes Johnston and Lunger continue to show the skills they demonstrated last year as sophomore starters.

Rounding out the roster are juniors Kyle Karpich, Tim Jones, Christina Richardson and Dakota Berg and freshman Nathan Palmer.

Hotchkiss believes Jones could be a strong contributor.

"He's inexperienced on the course, but he hits the ball well."

In the league, Hotchkiss sees Montrose as the primary contender.

"A lot of teams lost players to graduation," she explained.

Elk Lake plays its home matches at Tall Pines in Friendsville.
