Elk Lake Senior Holds Teen Suicide Awareness Fundraiser

Vanessa Otis of Lawton has created a memorial scholarship for an Elk Lake High School senior. The scholarship is in memory of Miranda Larnerd whose favorite quote was “If you want to see a rainbow, you must go through the rain.”

The first annual “Miranda’s Rainbow Tournament” was held on Aug. 18-21. The tournament was to promote awareness for teen suicide.

The tournament was hosted by the Susquehanna County Little League and held at the Rush Athletic Field in Lawton.

Four area teams participated. Miranda’s Rainbow from Rush, NEBall from Northeast Bradford area, RTL from the Wyalusing area and the Cherokees from Choconut/Montrose area.

NEBall took home the trophy with RTL taking second. The Cherokees took third and Miranda’s Rainbow came in fourth.

Local area businesses made donations or supplied prizes for a Chinese auction that was held at the tournament along with several 50/50’s, t-shirt sales and bracelets.

Together with school administration, Otis will present the scholarship at the 2012 awards ceremony.

Otis and Larnerd were friends until Larnerd moved away in 2008. She would have graduated in 2012. She enjoyed sports and having fun with family and friends. She is sadly missed and will be remembered always.
